It is possible to\u00a0<strong>have a bladder infection without having<\/strong>\u00a0the characteristic symptoms. In some cases,\u00a0<strong>bladder infections<\/strong>\u00a0may not cause symptoms at all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms of a\u00a0bladder infection\u00a0are similar to those of any lower urinary tract infection (UTI). These symptoms are similar in men, women, and children. The main symptoms of bladder infection are<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>pain,<\/li><li>discomfort, or<\/li><li>burning when trying to urinate.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There may be a sense of needing to urinate frequently (urinary frequency) or having to urinate urgently (urinary urgency). Passing only a small amount of urine even though you feel the need to urinate is another common symptoms. A cloudy appearance to the urine can be present if there is a bacterial infection that produces pus in the urine. The urine also may be red in color due to bleeding. Alternatively, the urine may not be changed in appearance, but\u00a0red blood cells, bacteria, or white blood cells may be detected on microscopic examination of the urine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Men and women may feel\u00a0pain in the lower abdomen. Men may also feel\u00a0pain in the rectum, while women may feel\u00a0pain\u00a0around the area of the pubic bone.\u00a0Fever\u00a0is not a common symptom of\u00a0bladder infection;\u00a0fever\u00a0is more typical of\u00a0urinary tract infections\u00a0that have spread to the kidneys or bloodstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is possible to have a bladder infection without having the characteristic symptoms. Infants may not have specific symptoms and may appear lethargic and fussy. Also in the elderly, specific signs and symptoms may not be present. In some cases, bladder infections may not cause symptoms at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Causes of bladder infections<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Bladder infection is typically caused by a bacterial infection. The bacterial type known as\u00a0<em>E. coli<\/em>\u00a0(<em>Escherichia coli<\/em>)\u00a0is the most common organism responsible for bladder infection or\u00a0cystitis.
