It is more common in women than in men. In men, it is more common in older men than younger men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are some of the more common causes of\u00a0painful urination:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Infections.\u00a0<\/strong>Urinary tract infections\u00a0(UTIs) are one of the leading causes of painful urination. Infections can occur in any part of the urinary tract, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Kidneys<\/li><li>Ureters (tubes that carry urine from the\u00a0kidneys\u00a0to the\u00a0bladder)<\/li><li>Bladder<\/li><li>Urethra (tube from the bladder that carries urine out of the body)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Urinary tract infections\u00a0are most often caused by bacteria that get into the urinary tract through the urethra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Factors that can increase your chance of developing a UTI include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Being a woman<\/li><li>Diabetes<\/li><li>Advanced age<\/li><li>Enlarged prostate<\/li><li>Kidney stones<\/li><li>Pregnancy<\/li><li>Having a urinary catheter in place<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Fever<\/li><li>Foul or stronger-smelling urine<\/li><li>Cloudy or bloody urine<\/li><li>Increased urinary frequency or urge to urinate<\/li><li>Flank pain<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes painful urination can be related to a vaginal infection, such as a\u00a0yeast infection. With\u00a0vaginal infections, you may also expect changes in\u00a0vaginal discharge\u00a0and odor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sexually transmitted infections can also cause painful urination. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Genital herpes<\/li><li>Chlamydia<\/li><li>Gonorrhea<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides painful urination, these sexually transmitted infections can also cause symptoms such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Itching<\/li><li>Burning<\/li><li>Blisters\u00a0or sores for\u00a0genital herpes<\/li><li>Abnormal discharge<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Inflammation and irritation.&nbsp;<\/strong>A range of problems can lead to inflammation or irritation of the urinary tract or genital area, leading to the symptom of painful urination.
